The vineyards are located in Tupungato, Mendoza, the area recognized by the press worldwide as the best wine growing region from Argentina. This area is named after the Tupungato Mountain, which elevates at 6,550 m (21,500 feet); because of this, it is known as “a balcony to the stars”. Finca Sophenia’s grapes are grown at 1,200 m (4,000 feet) at the foothill of this majestic mountain. The word Sophenia is the combination of the names Sophia and Eugenia, the daughters of Roberto Luka and Gustavo Benvenuto, founders of the company. Finca Sophenia also offers the ALTOSUR range, which means “high in the south” as tribute to the altitude of the Tupungato Mountain. Wine Advocate: Score: 89 The 2012 Altosur Malbec has a clean pure bouquet of black currant, raspberry, licorice and vanilla scents. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy, ripe tannins. There is plenty of red berry fruit as well as good weight on the brambly red fruit finish. This is well-made and should age nicely over one or two years. Drink now-2016.
